Qualities of a Fashion Stylist

Fashion styling is not a nine-to-five job. The days can be long and physically draining. As you start out you not only need visual flair and a love of fashion, you also need to be an incredibly hard worker with a can-do attitude and a head for business. However, the further you develop, the more help you will receive, and with luck you will become a polished and creative professional stylist.

The qualities that a stylist needs are listed in the image below (see Chapter 1).

Hello & welcome! I'm Danielle Griffiths - Stylist Director and Author of Fashion Stylist's Handbook. I’ve put together a whole heap of information for you to look through and devour. A lot of it you’ll find in my book, but this blog lets me delve further into the subject of fashion styling. I hope you enjoy what you find and that it’s useful. I started working as a UK-based fashion stylist in 2001. My editorial work has appeared in the country's leading fashion magazines and newspapers. I have styled for major advertising and music clients, while working alongside some of the world's best photographers. Whilst working as a stylist I encountered one too many assistants who didn't know enough about the industry. Not through any fault of their own, rather due to a lack of accessible information. With that in mind I set about creating the Fashion Stylist's Handbook. Since completing my book I have been invited to talk about fashion styling at The Fashion & Textile Museum, London; Condé Nast College Of Fashion & Design, London; and MODESIGN Academy , Brussels. I wrote a course on 'The Business of Fashion Styling' for UIBS , Antwerp, while working as a freelance stylist for De Standaard Magazine - the weekend supplement to De Standaard, Belgium's leading quality newspaper. VISITING LECTURER, STYLIST WORKSHOPS & ONE-TO-ONES Since 2018 I have been a Visiting Lecturer at Condé Nast College Of Fashion & Design, teaching fashion styling. As a Stylist Director, I mentor and coach those entering the styling profession as well as more experienced creatives who need their skills to evolve with the industry. I offer Stylist Workshops & the more bespoke option of One-to-One training. I'm Opening Up A Closed World! Danielle X
